McRae family papers, 1791-1858.

Collection contains correspondence, business records, and miscellaneous items pertaining to John McRae and the McRae family. Correspondence consists mainly of business letters (1849-1858) to John McRae at Charleston (S.C.), and drafts of John McRae's business letters to various individuals. Correspondents include Edward Manigault, E. Myers, and James Gadsden. Topics discussed include railroad company ventures, "vulcanized india rubber springs," and sewing machines. Business records include a fragment of a daybook (1800) from a Camden (S.C.) general store possibly owned by Duncan McRae or Zachariah Cantey, and leaves from a business ledger (1842) containing accounts for the sale of cotton and "merchandise and sundries." Miscellaneous items include an indenture (1791) between Archelaus Payne and Duncan McRa (McRae) and Zechariah Cantey for the sale of land located "South Side Wateree River," and leaves from an estate account book (1833) recording payments to Dr. E.H. Anderson for medical services to McRae family members and slaves at a plantation.

Scottish immigrants to South Carolina. Duncan McRae (1754-1824) came to South Carolina from Rosshire, Scotland before the Revolutionary War and eventually settled in Camden, South Carolina, where he became a merchant. Duncan McRae married Mary Chesnut (1771-1843) in 1789 and was partner with Zachariah Cantey (1759-1822) in McRae & Cantey, a mercantile and milling business in Camden.
